For a few weeks now Bug has been in the habit of coming out of her bedroom after she goes in for night or naptime. She'll quietly approach the playroom and sit on the top of the stairs, right outside the playroom door, and peak in the door at us. There she'll wait till she's noticed or for a couple minutes before poking her head in the room and calling for us. Typically the first escape is to say she has to go potty, something she knows we will never deny her. When she is fired up and wants to use further stall tactics, she'll come out and make some silly announcement, like, "I need to throw this tissue away," or "I need something" [looking around and picking something seemingly at random]. Sometimes she'll simply say, "I had a nice nap." Each time, we shoo her back into her room, blanket her and turn her music back on if need be.
Naptime in itself is kind of a joke these days. It's rare that she actually sleeps. More often than not, she's in there singing, reading books or playing doctor on Boohbah. We still insist that she has this "rest" time, though. It's a mainstay at her daycare, and we try to keep the same schedule. It's also our sanity -- my sanity, -- especially these days with K's horrible schedule.
This afternoon's naptime has been fraught with escapes, so many that I've ceased to escort her back each time. She has pottied. She has "needed something" (heading back to her room with the zoo map used this week when she went with Mom Mom and Pop Pop). The most recent (several) visits to the playroom really take the cake, so I share them with you.
First she had to tell me that her map got ripped. On her way out, she announced that she, Boohbah and Maggie the ephalent (a stuffed animal my parents got her at the zoo) were going to be playing something unintelligible.
Then Bug showed up at the playroom door. No more sidling, sneaking or peaking. She walked in and said, rather annoyed, that Boohbah was not listening. He was being mean to Maggie the ephalent (no, she won't just call her Maggie). I suggested Bug give Boohbah a time out, and to be sure he apologizes and gives her a big hug when it's over.
Then she announced that Boohbah was listening now, and he had said sorry and given Maggie a big hug.
Uh oh. Boohbah's being naughty again. Also, someone's being mean to Dumbo and Maggie "threw the missing piece" (no clue what she's talking about). She's going to try another time out.
Then she appears, Boohbah under one arm and her stethoscope in the other. Boohbah is sick now from her cough.
It's been about ten minutes since her last visit. I turned on the monitor to find out what's going on. A lot of clattering, and some mumbling about the zoo. And scraping. What the heck is she doing in there?
You can call that a cliffhanger.
